AWD > ME

Ok so, my Friend gots a stock GSX, and wanted to race a stock tsiAWD. We went to the spot, and guess what.

ALL AWD!!!!
There were 5 GSX's and me with the only T, and Spyder at that. They were all on Stock turbo. But one was with his Downpipe off. Sounded mean as hell. Well my friend raced beat him once lost the second time, and the guy didnt want to run anymore.

Well they start looking at me and they wanted to go at me. (they dont know what the hell i got) So i said sure. Raced a gsx, and automatically launched on me bad. (i have the worst launches in the world, wheel hop owns me) SOoo bad he put 2 1/2 cars on me. Caught up to him in begining of 3rd gear. and flew by him.

Then i am running a red one with the downpipe off and boostin 15psi. He launched on me worst (this time when i launched my RPM dropped bad and had to pick it up so he got a good distance. I didnt catch up untill end of 3rd/beginning of 4th. So i was pissed because he threw his flashers before i passed him, so they can think he won. I was just like whatever. I went back.

Asked anybody if they wanted to get on the freeway real quick (SILENCE). me: "yeah thought so"

I would've been cooler about it but they were actin like bitches.

Cant wait for more upgrades and better launches

who ever races in a resedential area is a ******** idiot......but i cant hack street racing because i do it......but im nice / smart enough to do it in non-residential areas far from any children or people on foot.

i cant wait tell i can upgrade my turbo. i want a EvoIII 16g / 550's / 255 feul pump / and a SAFC.... but as of right now im still workin on my Centerforce clutch....i hope that imrpoving my launching capabilities.

speaking of launching,,,,,,,how well built is the trany in a 95 GSX??? can i launch at like 6200 RPM and not break my trany ?

Re: AWD > ME

I launch at 5500 99% of the time, on a stutter box though, so its making boost when the clutch engages. There is no difference in strength between a stock tranny and a built tranny, aside from 4 spider center diffs. All stock parts are used, even if they may be from different years. For example, I put early 1g 3-4th gear set in my tranny, since its a little beefier, even though it doesnt shift as well. They make billet forks as well, but the first set I bought was a big mistake (wear out too quickly). Not to mention that of all the parts I broke (everything else, literally) I never broke the the forks. IMO, if you break a shift fork you are pulling/pushing the shift lever too far and too hard. There is a difference between shifting quickly and trying to drive the shift knob into the glove box.

The center diff should be upgraded to avoid costly breakages later. I broke the stocker on a normal launch when the car was still in the 14s. A little wheel hop was all it took. I was one of the few lucky ones, the pieces stayed in the diff case. They usually go out and ruin all of the internals. Its about 5-600 bucks to do the upgrade. I always used speed design, I heard shep makes his own now too.

But, some poeple do tempt fate and run stock center diffs down into the 11s with some success. Seems they all go eventually though, just a matter of time.

While the rest of the tranny may be able to take tons of power, over time they will suffer from fatigue and fail. The teeth I ripped off the intermediate shaft, the input shaft I snapped in two, the galled and beat to shit first gear, etc, all fatigue. The only difference between a 2 thousand dollar typical "built tranny" and what shep runs is replacing both shafts

Re: AWD > ME

I ran one in the 2g last season. A spool to be spcific. It sucks. And your CV joints will hate you for it. For them it will be like launching the car 100% of the time. Lots of stress. I can take the binding up in turns, in fact I like the stupid looks I get when I drag the rear iside tire around tight turns in parking lots and such. But its a lot of wear for a street car to have to endure. But it will make life easier for the tranny.

Its also worth noting that rear drivetrain breakages, specifically the tcase and rear axles, are much much more common in cars with locked center diffs. Too much torque transfered to the rear drivetrain.

In short, I would leave those locked diffs to the race cars.

Re: AWD > ME

I have a centerforce clutch, and i love it, i did have an act but i find the centerforce works great for now. When i bought my talon the previous owner out oausie in the rear end....not sure how he did it...i havent gotten around to taking it apart yet. He also had a piece installed in the tranny for lcd in the front, i forget the name of the piece but i broke it and had to replace it, its amazing how well it hooks up with the lcd and pausie( i have no clue how to spell that)....im looking for a new s-afc 1 or 2, my old one was stolen...odd eh, if anyone has one they are looking to sell, let me know....about the tranny in the 95....i have virtually no experience on the 2gs, sorry cant help out there....

Thanks kevin! two questions though, what if the axles and cv joints were upgraded to be able to stand the extra stress? and is there a stronger rear end that can be used? I have also read that an alluminum driveshaft upgrade will help reduce the shock delivered to the rear end because the alluminum one has more torsional strength than the stocker. Have you thought of this?

Re: AWD > ME

I wouldnt subject any CV joint to that constant stress, even if a decent upgrade did exist.

CF and Al driveshafts do reduce the shock to the rear drivetrain, because they have more torsional FLEX. They twist something like 10-15 degrees, acting like a shock absorber. I have thought of running one, but at the price they go for, I just slip the clutch a little more. Poeple that hit the tires hard in a DSM quickly learn how expensive it can get and change their habbits
