more cranks to start

for some odd reason my car has been tougher to start after sitting overnight or while im at work. my car would usually start after the 2nd turn of the key but now it takes like 5-8 turns of the key for it to start. i tryed the pumping the gas pedal thing. i tried just pumping it once. then i tried just pumping it twice and so on but it still would have problems starting. any suggestions

Re: more cranks to start

would recommend checking the ignition system out. Also, are we talking about EFI or Carbed?

Re: more cranks to start

you bet ya. Might just be as simple as old plugs all the way up to a loose dizzy hold down creating off timing.

Re: more cranks to start

last resort, kind of like replacing the ECM. If a tune hasn't been done in a while, that's the way to go. And 9 out of 10 times at this time of year, driveability problems I see especially starting problems are due to weakened ignition systems, even if the car has been sittting, where do you think all that gummed up gas goes at start up? hello mr. plug.

So hindsight, just applying the k.i.s.s. rule.

Re: more cranks to start

(K.I.S.S.) Keep It Simple Stupid

I agree, before doing anything major, check all the regular maintanence things, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. all that fun stuff.

have you run the car for codes? there may be an error code even if the check engine light isnt on.

Also, with any fuel injected engine, pumping the gas dosnt do anything, and in some cases it may confuse the ECM. If you feel the need to push the pedal, push it down slightly and hold it there. This would allow the car to start if for instance the IAC valve wasnt working.

Re: more cranks to start

ya i ran my car for codes and the codes were 32 and 54. Not 100% on what those codes mean. And my car has been having problems with idleing when i stop the car stays at 1000 rpm and then goes to 500 and jumps back and forth between those two. It Doesnt happen all the time but 60% of the time

Re: more cranks to start

sounds very much like an ICM problem. your Ignition Control Module (ICM) is in your distributor under your rotor, costs about 50 bucks, and takes about 5 minutes to install. Its a no brainer. as to the codes, let me go grab my book and see what i can find for ya.

Re: more cranks to start

Code 32 - EGR failure

Code 54 - fuel pump voltage low

im guessing your idle stumble is related to the EGR, and the starting problem is due to a fuel pump problem.

with those codes i would ignore my advise about the ICM for now, i think those would be the key things to look at. especially the fuel pump circuit for the starting problem.

Re: more cranks to start

about that Code 54 - fuel pump voltage low, would you say the pump itself is going bad, or just the relay?
