auto transmission glitch
Rodeo 1999 3.2l v6 4WD
I am having an annoying fault with my auto transmission. What appears to be happening is that it is not changing gear smoothly and the effect is that if it were a manual it feels like I would be dumping the clutch. It is worse between 2nd and 3rd gears and marginal in other gears. Other symptoms are: It does not appear to stay in L , 2 or 3 Sometimes I have noticed a delay in the dashboard gear indication. I have had the transmission serviced and they said every thing was fine and no particles were present or anything untoward could be seen and of course the fault did not occur and has also not occurred with another service guy. I have since discovered that switching off the ignition will often clear the fault but not always. I have been told that these vehicle can suffer a problem with the switches in the gear shift.

No worries. This is a very common issue with the 4L30E. Faulty range sensor. Do a search for range/mode sensor & you will find many posts on this.

Similar issue
I think this is what mine does too.......it's like you can get up to a certain # of RPM's and then the car feels like it's slipping out of gear, but the engine doesn't rev up but the revs go down, then the tranny "catches" again and it's like bucking.....like leaving it in L but when you get to like 35 MPH, let off the gas....you jerk forward, the car RPM's drop a little while it slows down against the gears, then you hit the gas and it thrusts forward again. I want to try this repair out as well but I want to make sure it's what's wrong first-I din't have a lot of time on my hands to do this kind of thing!!

You should find it is the range mode sensor and it is a relatively easy fix. When you open the sensor up you will probably find that the grease inside has turned to toffee and has started to wear the contacts. You have to clean it all out using a solvent and cotton buds and replace it with a dielectric grease ( one that doesnt conduct electricity). There is some adjustment as to where the switch sits in relation to each contact. this is done when you put the sensor back on the vehicle and adjust its fixing to the trannystick only a bit!!. I did this and have not had a problem since the original posting.
