Lowering a 2500HD

Is there a relatively cheap and easy way to lower a 2005 GMC 2500HD 4wd about 2-3" so it sets about the same height as their 1500HD? I like the height of the 1500HD, but I can't get the engine/transmission combination I want without going to the 2500HD. But, I really like the lower step-in height of the 1500HD. I read on the Internet that the suspensions are basically the same on the 1500HD and 2500HD. The difference is that the 2500HD has a slightly taller frame AND GM used 2" taller body mounts, thus all one has to do is switch body mounts with no other changes.

You could release some tension on the torsion bars to drop the front somewhat. In the rear you'd need to remove leaves from the spring pack. By doing so, you'd also be lowering your GVWR. Also, less leaves in the spring pack can allow easier axle wrap on accelleration and braking. Be sure to get it realigned afterward if readjusting the front. It may be tough getting as low as a 1500HD without messing up the front end geometry and the suspension bumpers will be in full contact with the control arm. Most people I hear from are just doing the rear suspension to level the truck as the rear sits high out of the box.

The 2500HD's naturally sit up 2" taller then the 1500HD's due to the taller frame rails. The 1500HD actually uses a standard 2500 frame and is 8600 GVWR instead of 9200 GVWR.

That's helpful. I'll look at the site further later. In my line of work I get a lot of questions about this. They want to lower them, then add air springs to resore their capacity.

Are there any negatives to adjsuting the torsion bars to lower the front end about an 1"? Capacity reduced? Ride/handling?

Does anyone make heavy-duty lowering shackles that are made of 1/4" steel?
