98 Pontiac Grand Am se hesitates

I have a 98 Pontiac Grand am se. Im having trouble with some jerks on the car. When going about 50 or 60 miles, the car jerks about 3 times. Ive changed the spark plugs and still doing that.

Deb, Sounds like you may have a fuel flow problem. Have you changed the fuel filter? Or had the injectors cleaned?

Others on the Forum may have some sdditional ideas.

My 97 SE does the same exact thing. I've tried plugs, fuel filter, and injection cleaner with no dice. I am thinking of either trying a new ignition coil or maybe having the injectors cleaned professionally. I know alot of people on the forum have this same issue, but I never seem to hear of any happy endings as far as clearing it up...

Re: 98 Pontiac Grand Am se hesitates

Well guys I have the happy ending. My 96 GAGT 5spd. was acting up real bad especially when shifting from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. It got to the point that it was running so bad that I was dumping raw fuel down into the cat. converter where it would ignite and make the converter burn red hot. Anyway, it came down to replacing the ignition module and having the injectors professionally cleaned. Between the two the car has never run better I have no hesitation and all of the power that I need even in 5th gear. I did state this in my thread about the hesitation but it was a while ago. Any way I was going to recomend to Deb that she get the injectors professionally cleaned ( about $60.00 done at Midas). I plan on doing it every 5 to 10 thousand miles from now on I have 120,000 mi. on my 96 and like I said it runs great.

Keep in mind this is what fixed my car, your issues may be different. I have also changed in the recent past the plugs, wires, coil packs, fuel filter, so it may have bee a complete combination of all of the items replaced.

Take it for what it's worth.
Good luck,

p.s Deb you shouldn't need to change any injectors unless you have a bad one. It is unlikely but possible. I would try a cleaning first, that will tell you if you have a bad one.

Re: 98 Pontiac Grand Am se hesitates

WOW, I thought I was the only one that had that problem! I also had the same problem with the cat turning red hot! My problem was the timing, which after getting the car back together and the timing chain back to where it's suppose to be, I had taken the car for a ride to find out that it ran terrible! I got back and found that my timing had jumped again and had to do it all over again (which is a really pain)! Well, after 4 times of lifting the motor and getting the new timing cain slack adjuster I finally got it running good. But now I have a rough idle, But thats on another thread! Good Luck
