500-1000 for a FULL color change paint job? WHOLE car like he asked? That means bumpers, roof, quarter panels, hood, trunk, doors, fenders...all of it. It will be a heck of a lot more than $500-1000 for someone to do a decent color change.

If you want to do your own prep-work, you'll want to strip all the old paint off, sand and primer the car yourself, etc. Doing the prep work will definatly cut the costs down, but it'll still likely cost more than $500-1000 for a full decent color change. Do AS MUCH prep work as you can, study and learn how. Have the car as bare as possible when it goes in, this will help cut the cost down a lot. Doing your own prep work as as much as you can is definatly worth doing if you have the time and know how.

Silverbolt used to work at a body shop, you can try asking him how much he thinks it will save...and maybe ask him for any advice.

i know a kid who had his car color changed, and they only charged him like $700, came out pretty good too.

Well I can tell you that's definatly not the norm. Color change paint jobs are in the thousands of dollars normally, not in the hundreds. If he got a full color change for $700, and it came out good, then he lucked out or new somebody. If they did it correctly and did the door/trunk jambs and engine bay, then he REALLY got lucky or new somebody.

He may have paid $700 for his color change, but as I said, a good proper color change in no where near $700, so he lucked out or new someone. I know people how have gotten color changes for a good price. Heck, I got mine for free like 4 years ago, with qaulity paint, clears and primers...and it was done right...but that was all becuase you knew the right people. Just becuase I got it free or your buddy got one for $700 doesn't mean everyone can. They may not have the connections, may not get so lucky or know the right people...

Everything needed for painting, i got for 300$.. sandpaper, roll of paper, maskingtape, 1 gal ppg paint, 1 gal omni clear, 1.5 gal reducer,.. think thats it.

Painting a car is very time consuming, do it yourself.

300$ $ and it could be yours, any way you like it, tasty

He's correct, the SUPPLIES to paint a car aren’t awful...and the price to paint it yourself if you can is MUCH less expensive than having someone else do it. Remember that it's the labor that will drive the prices up or down for the most part. Doing it yourself will save you lots of labor, which equals money. As he said, a paint job is very time consuming, color changes paint jobs especially. The labor I one of the reasons having a body shop do the paint job is so much...well, that and the increase in parts price from wholesale to retail. If you do the prep work yourself, it will help lower the price.

$300-400 should be enough for you to buy the SUPPLIES needed to paint it yourself, assuming you have the skill or are willing to learn. Remember that when someone else paints the car, you are paying $50-75 per hour for the shop labor. Painting a car, especially a color change...is time consuming. This extensive labor one of the reasons it costs a lot.

Anything you can do yourself before the car goes into the shop, whether it is prep-work, removing interior pieces or removing of panel, will help keep the cost down.

All right so what exactly would you have to remove, and where can you find the paint. For example I want to paint my car but the same color and probably get a different front bumper say a R34. What prep work can I do that would save me a couple hundred bucks. I didnt want to hijack the convo or anything.
