Reason for celebrating birthdays?

Why do humans celebrate birthdays?? The best reason I could think of was celebrating another year of not dieing. Any thoughts?

Its the day you came into existence however so many years ago. So, its just another excuse for people to be reconized in someway, and an excuse to do stuff you wouldnt normally do.

hmm

I believe its the opposite to what ozriceboy said. Instead of celebrating 'not dieing', isn't it celebrating another year that you have lived. Its an achievment, and having a birthday is just one way or recognising it.

for example when you turn 50, its an achievment to have lived half a centuary, therefore you celebrate it!

1/What's the difference? celebrating a year livd VS a year of not dieing?
2/What is the achievement? All you have achieved in 50 years may be what someone else has achieved in 25 years!

birthdays

I'm thinking that a birthday is a way of relating passing time to a persons experinces in life. The greater the gap between experiences, the older you are.

It's all relative man:bandit:

Its for the Presents!!!!!!!!

As you get older you should be able to afford more expensive toys which you can justify buying due to your life span getting shorter.

The reality is that it marks your growth through the passage of time.
People generally relate age to wisdom & knowledge. Which is not always true as can be proven by politicians. (Dumber then a box of Rocks.)

Yeah Panda made a good point (even if he is 3!), that with age comes wisdom and knowledge.

So therefore when you celebrate getting older you're celebrating you advancement (in many ways)

Ozriceboy must fall into this catagory.

3 in Panda Years is 30 in human years. That is why we are so Sillyphosical.
