advice on losing weight?

i am 5'7'' 150 lbs. i need some advice on losing weight. i dont mind running on the tredmill for 20 or 30 minutes a day but it seems like nothing comes off? any good diet plans? suggestions? i was told that if i am on a 1500 calorie a day diet and run for 30 minutes a day, i can lose 30 pounds in 2 months, not told by a doc, so im not sure if its true.

Re: advice on losing weight?

Well to maintain your current weight you need to eat about 2250 calories each day, if you are looking to lose weight you should eat about 500 fewer calories each day. Which is 1750 calories. This is for losing a pound of fat in a week, you shouldnt ever try to loose more than that in a week.
If you do decide to run on the treadmill you should try to keep count on how many calories you burn and adjust your diet depending on how many calories you burn.

A little information about calories and losing weight. 3500 calories = 1lb of fat. If you want to gain weight you need to add 3500 calories more than you burn into your body, to lose weight you need to do the opposite.

If your running 30 minutes a day and eating 1500 calories yeah, the weight will drop like nothin...at first. Then your body will go into "starvation mode" and you might be losing weight but not fat. You need to keep your metabolism going and burning strong. You should try instead of eating 3 meals a day, eating 5 or 6 smaller meals, that way you keep your metabolism at a more steady rate instead of it going up and down all day.

No problem man, thats what we are here for. When you get into it if you have any questions about anything dont hesitate to ask, its always better to find out if something will work before you start on it than to find out it doesnt. Good luck with it!

Re: advice on losing weight?

Find a piece of equipment that you can spend more time on. I would eat 2000 calories and spend 30 minutes in the cardio zone and 30 min in the aerobic zone. Don't cut back much on your calories unless you know you won't cheat.

I always used to start out on reduced cal diets and would always end up binging every 5 days. I would never lose more than 4 pounds doing this. I have been doing what I suggested above and have dropped 6 pounds in the last month. This isn't bad because I have been lifting the whole time and have gained a fair amount of muscle.

PS. Why the heck do you want to lose 30 pounds?

Re: advice on losing weight?

^^^ Thats some really good advice. Dieting is one of the hardest things about trying to lose weight. Really when you are trying to lose weight it should be about 70% Diet and 30% exercise, thats "ideal" but its not too realistic. Dont go overboard on either one and you should be able to stick with it. For example, with your calories if one day you say eat 2200 calories dont sweat it, your goal is to keep 3500 fewer calories in your body in the course of a week, one day doesnt make or break you, you might just need to eat a little better the next day. When you start on the treadmill dont worry if you cant run for a long time, running hurts, every morning that I get up to go for a jog I want to cry...but I love it so much, it makes me feel so much better afterwards. Just dont cheat yourself, keep going even if its a walking pace for an hour its better than nothing. Best of luck to you.

Jeez, I sound like one of those excited jackasses on the informercials: Keep with it! dont give up!
If I ever start wearing spandex someone please shoot me.

Re: advice on losing weight?

Trust me dude. If you cut back too much on your calories you will behave like a crack addict at the first sign of a candy bar.
