Fuel Capacity

For some reason, my low fuel light comes on after using about 11-11.5 gallons. The most I have been able to fill it up to was a little over 12 gallons, and that was after I had buried the gas needle and thought it was pretty much out. Is this normal? On www.2gnt.com, it says that the fuel capacity is 16.9 gallons. Why does my car think its outa gas if the tank has another 4-5 gallons left?

Re: Fuel Capacity

Its in the owners manual. I'ved pump the tank dry 100 times. It seems that there is about a gallon that you cant get to. And about a 4 gallon reserve when the needle hits "E" in my case. Which leaves you a tank that appears to have 11-12 gallons capacity. Rest assured that I have done 450 mile/14.5 gallon tanks on long highway trips, so it again backs up Mitsus 16.9 gallon story.

Alright thanks for the reply. Your get that good of mileage in a GSX? Wholly shit. My car sucks. I don't think I've ever broke 30 mpg, even on long trips. Thanks for the info.

Re: Fuel Capacity

i noticed that too...these fuel gauges are garbage....i swear i can drive for a good 2 hours or more when my needle is below E...i think if i filled the tank up and drove on a highway in 5th gear till i was on E i'd end up with near 500 miles total

Not to get too far off topic, but I got the same mileage even with the 14b in high 12 second trim. With the car running high 11s, I still got 28 mpg going out to ohio for the shootout, ran some 11s, and got 28 mpg on the way home. After that it went down hill. And fuel economy dropped faster than the ETs did, thats for sure

How the hell do you get such good mileage? I can't seem to do better than 22-23 average, and that's even when I baby the damn thing. I'd say 75% of my miles are highway, and I have new plugs and wires 3k ago. I also use Mobil 5w30 5,000 mile oil, with a PureOne oil filter. Don't know if that affects gas mileage though. Maby think about replacing the O2 sensor? I donno I'd just assume have fun with the car and get the same damn gas mileage as when I baby it. Dosn't make sense.

I know that many times I've ran the car so long on E that I thought that the car was about to die. But I never ran out of gas even though I've ran for a couple of days on E.

A little off topic but if anybody has the chance to see the episode of Seinfeld where Cramer takes a Saab (i think) for a test drive. The guy that rides with him is very parenoid about how low the fuel gauge reads and he keeps insisting on returning to the dealership before running out of gas, well Cramer believes that when the tank is running low that she has many miles left in her so he pushes it for the whole episode driving all over the place, on E. I think the episode is funny because of the way the guy from the dealership acts when Cramer doesn't want to return the car till he's out of gas. Oh well sorry for the off topic moment, just the thread reminded me of it.

Re: Fuel Capacity

In the first few months I had the car, the mpg went to shit, and I started to hear about some faint black smoke out the exhaust at WOT. No CELs. Changed the O2 sensor just for good measure, and sure enough, cruise and low throttle angle performance improved, and mileage improved as well. All of the little things matter when it comes to economy. The closed loop control system will cover up most inadequacies. The O2 sensor is the one that it cant compensate for at all, because that is where it gets all its info from.

So do you think that if I had the O2 sensor replaced it would help me out with mileage? Fuckin gas just went up again, if this would help me out like 2-3 mpg, I will definately do it. $2.33 a gallon for 87 octane!!! WTF is going on.

I hear ya, I live in NewYork on the Western end near the PA border and our gas just went up to $2.33 also but the worst thing about it is that I haven't really been paying attention to it until yesterday when I looked at the price and saw that it had gone up from $2.11 since I last looked at it. This sucks.

Re: Fuel Capacity

yeah pa's gas prices suck. 87 Octant 2.21 89 Octane 2.35 91? or is it 93? Octane 2.45. Thats at the cheapest station I can find in the allentown area. :/

I'm use to putting 89 in my tank... But it's getting so expensive. maybe time to swtich back to 87 for a little... It has a slight knock at low rpms though with 87 :/
