rear end gear question

Hey guys, I got a friend with a 93 Formula and he just had his mechanic put in a set of 4.10 gears, everything seems to be working great but they whine like you wouldn't believe. The mechanic said they are slimed correctly and that they just need to be run for a few hundred miles to break in. So do the gears need to be broken in to stop the whining or did he do something wrong when he put them in because I read on another thread that some whining could be caused from using a impact gun instead of a torque wrench and a breaker bar. Any help would be appreciated.

if the gears are Richmond, I've heard they whine no matter what.(that's just what I have heard).

If you used GM Gears, then they're not setup correctly. Whether he didn't shim them correctly or used to much force to install them.

I'd have him double check them and use a TORQUE wrench to put everything back together.

Well what brand gears are they?, cause certain manufactors that use alot of nickel cause whining. Also it is true that new gears do cause whining due to excess heat generated during the break in period but it should not be extremely excessive. Tell your friend good luck.

They are Richmond gears, so if you might be right DarkBlueTA.
