May purchase a Escort ZX2.. questions about performance and reliability.

Hey,

I may be purchasing an auto 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. But i have some questions about the car. I've read over the forums a bit and people have been saying the tranny on the auto is crap. Now, the car has 149km and when we took it for a test drive, we checked the tranny fluid and it was dirty and had chunks. Could that mean the tranny is about ready to kick the bucket?

how reliable is the car? i read it's suppose to be pretty good.

On the performance side, i'm not looking for anything really, as i'm getting the zx2 more for the economy side of things. It's great on gas But what can i expect from the auto escort zx2? how expensive would it be to get it into mid to low 15's, which is fast enough for me

For me, my choices kind of range between a cavy or a sunfire

Anybody ever get bugged about it being a chick car?

Re: May purchase a Escort ZX2.. questions about performance and reliability.

they do mid 15's stock with a very good driver, basic mods will throw you into the low 15's, possibly better. (of course that being the manual 5 speed) the auto's are probably mid 16 second cars.

If they have the cd4e (like that of the contour), they are pretty weak trannys and they max out at about 200hp crank (175-185whp).

the auto is weak. i wouldn't buy one w/ that many km's on it honestly. that's askin to replace it right away. the mtx is a bit stronger if it's been commuter driven and not raced or beat on a bunch.

is more of a high 15sec car. i have never seen a NON-S/R equiped zx2 hit mid 15's stock

it is not the same auto as teh contour, but is stil very weak

an auto ZX2 is any place from 17.3-17.7 stock
