OK, about 10 mins ago i was looking aroung AF, and when i got here

it came up with some kind of login box for "filebox.vt.edu"

it wasn't a web based login, it was as though i was asked to log into a server, i didn't login i clicked cancel. but i just want to know what it is?

The user "Self" suppose to have an image in his signature, which is located on that server that you mentioned above, however, access to that server's contents must not be public or have some restrictions, hence, why you're prompted for a username/password for that server.
