1987 Chev C20 Crewcab brakes
These trucks are apparently notorious for weak brakes despite having large disks and rear drums. Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the braking power on this type of vehicle? Would a late model disc brake rear end swap into this truck? I currently run a 6000 lbs. stock rearend.

Re: 1987 Chev C20 Crewcab brakes
I have an '86 3/4 ton, with the 1 ton axles and brakes. I have noticed no problem with my brakes. If you're having a problem with yours, you may want to try Bendix TitaniuMetallic pads&shoes (I don't know for sure if they make shoes, but it would make sense that they do). I just put a set of thier pads on my truck today, and they make a HUGE difference over regular semi-metallic pads. Mine were $31.xx, and were the same part number as '87s. They will replace them for free if they ever wear out, which is why I got them. I went for a short test drive, and they were better than my old pads even before they were burnished.

Re: 1987 Chev C20 Crewcab brakes
I am running Raybestos Severe-Duty Pads and shoes. The master is new not bebuilt, I have replaced the booster, the calipers and wheel cylinders are new. I cannot lock up the wheels, there is just not enough strength in the system. Normal braking is not an issue, panic or sudden stops stops are just that! Heart stopping!

Check the rotors and drums for glazing. If they look ok, check all the hoses. They may be deteriorating and stretching slightly, thus reducing the pressure. Also, how is the brake pedal acting?

I'd go ahead and throw some SS lines in there if I were you, I'll bet there is some flexing going on in those old rubber lines. Upgrade pads and rotors up front. Out back there isn't much you can do except spend a lot of money on a rear disc kit. My 92's brakes aren't that great either, at least compared to the newest generation Chevy's.

I have the same thing with my 88 1500, My insurance company almost bought me a newer Impala the other day that pulled out in front of me
I can't lock mine either when I try. I'm going to fiddle around with them when I replace my pads, until then, I'll just keep going for the ditch instead
