Short shifter... Performance?

Is a short shifter a performance upgrade? Does it affect the gearing of a car? Or does it just simply provide a shorter linkage or just a shorter throw?

Re: Short shifter... Performance?

yeah it stopes you from missing gears. You need to put the bushing kit on, that will make a world of diff.

how does it stop you from missing gears?

All a short shifter does (if it is a real short throw shifter and not just a shorter shifter) is make the throw of the shift shorter so that you can shift faster therefore keeping downtime between shifts at a minimum.

However I think learning how to shift would be a better idea than installing a short shifter. If you know how to shift quickly then a short throw shifter won't really help you much. I don't know if its still floating around AF but whtteg had a video of himself driving and he can shift quicker with a stock shifter than most people can shift one with a short throw that i have seen. anyway my two cents would be to try and perfect shifting rather than waste the money on a short throw.

Re: Short shifter... Performance?

It makes your shifts more precise. You can hit them better and faster. I have had one on every car that i have owned

PM whtteg and tell him I mentioned a video of him driving and that you guys would like to see it. I believe the videos original intent was to show how his ITR exhaust sounds on his LS. He may not have it uploaded any more but if you ask maybe he will upload it again to show it.

Re: Short shifter... Performance?

I will see if I can find it. It is such a bad quality video though, but you can hear the shift and the old exhaust I had. The ITR exhaust was not on at the time of the vid, I had a Vibrant exhaust on at the time.

Re: Short shifter... Performance?

Ok here is the link to the exhaust .wav that I had. You need to right click save as when you get to the thread. Now please do not post in the thread.

And here is the thread that the vid is in. You will need to right click save as agian and if you have dial up forget it, file size is 4.25megs. You will need Quicktime to view it too.
