Reverse fails to engage (sometimes stalls) 93 E350 Cargo/Super/XL - EROD auto trans

My 1993 Econoline 350 Cargo/Super/XL van with a 5.8L V8 EFI HO & automatic EROD transmission occasionally will not engage in “R” Reverse. No other gear will then engage until you rev the engine really high. After a delayed reaction the transmission will engage. Sometimes while trying to engage R the engine will stall (Not always!)

sounds like your torque converter clutch is locking up at the wrong time

EROD transmission

The transmission is an EROD. The torque converter was professionally replaced and no change was noted.

The transmission will engage and drive normally but on occassion when putting into Reverse from Drive-Neuteral fails to engage leaving transmission in Neutral. Once in this state putting transmission in any gear will not remove it from Neutral. Rev engine high while in R or D will cause a few second delayed engagement (sometimes stalls before gas can be applied if in Reverse only.)
