linkage problems & removing center console

hey everyone, its been a while since i have made it on here. how is everyone?

well im back and i need help with my car. i have been having shifter problems for a long time. the shifter is really stiff and it never goes to the right linkage area. for drive its half between drive and 2nd and all the rest is screwed up to. well now there are really screwed. i have not drove the car the whole winter. i got in the other day and got some gas in her, came home and when i put it in park, it went into reverse and would not cacth park. i messed with it and the shifter cable or whatever controll it from changing gears broke or something. the shifter moves all free now and its all broke. i did get it into park after it broke so i can turn the key back. anyways, its also stuck in drive. not the shifter, the trans. i guess that was the last gear it was in b4 it broke and thats where it stayed. does anyone know what to do and how to get the shifter hooked back up? also, i have some of the console around the shitfer off, but i cant get the main piece off. therefore i cant get under it and see whats up with it, how do i get it out. i have the 2 star screws out in the front, i cant find anything else. please help. thanks_STEVE

Re: linkage problems & removing center console

I had that problem as well with my 93 Mustang. The linkage is put together by a bar that goes from the Trans back up to the shifter. It is held on by one bolt underneaht the car. There are two ways to reset it. Put the shifter on the car all the way to your lowest gear then shift the trans to it's lowest gear or put both in park and work with it from there. It may take a few tries but it is a little something that could be done before looking into a new trans.

Re: linkage problems & removing center console

Ojkay and another thing that you need to know, in order to take the cenert console off, it comes apart in like 3 places if I am not mistaken. The middle, back then front I believe. It is a pain to get too, but in order to take the back off you will need a pretty decent start bit. It is like the same size that you would use to remove your seat belts. The part around the shifter is like a little trim pieace that can be removed. But, once you get the center piece off you can take it all off easily
