2005 Impala Oil Change

I just recently purchased a 2005 Chevy Impala and am looking to do my own basic maintenance on the car. I used Mobile 1 on my 1999 Chevy Blazer, but that car I bought used and this is my first brand new car. Is it okay to switch to synthetic on a new car? Is it recommended for the Impalas? If not recommend a good oil and oil filter I should use. Thanks!

Re: 2005 Impala Oil Change

you can go to synthetic oil on any car at any time, its not always good if you do it on a car that has a lot of miles. but the one thing you have to remember is once you go synthetic, you CANT go back. so if you make that choice you have to stick with that choice. but unless you just want the added protectino, its not going to give you any added life of the oil. like the new mobils that say 5000, 7500, or 15000 miles, unless you keep track of it yourself, you'll still have to keep reseting the change oil alert each time it comes up. the impalas computer keep track of engine temp and revolutions and based on those, after so long it sets off the alarm for the oil and tells you that it needs to be changed. so whether you use normal or synthetic, the computers calculations are going to be the same.

You can go synthetic (although i think it is a waste of money, because even with synthetic you should still change the oil every 3,000.... oil still gets dirty)

But once you put it in, you cant put regular oil in the car.

I had a car that used to go back and fourth with synthetic... I assumed if it was a no-no, oil change place wouldn't have done it... then again most oil change places have high-schoolers who know just as much as I do about cars... hmmm...

If you go syn... I'd stick with it. Just make sure to keep a eye on your oil, you could likely go over 3k miles on syn, but I would keep tabs on the oil.
