Re: importing jdm mr2 ?
let me refrase my question I live in japan now and own the mr2, I am in the usaf and want to take it back with me. saying that just so you all dont think I am being crazy to import a mr2 to the us so I can get a engine that has 25 more hp. the main reason is that i spent 1500 dollars on it and it only has 60k miles on it. so even if i end up paying 2-3k for import/legalizing it, I am still probley ahead of the game seeing as how I can probley sell it in the us for 6-8 k. any ways just wanted to point out that this is not your typical pipe dream like umm "I saw a 1999 skyline gtr for 20k on the internet for sale, how can i bring it back" type of question :P

Re: importing jdm mr2 ?
some problems you'll run into:
lots of stuff is not DOT legal: glass (all of it...), tires, seatbelts... etc Japanese cars have no EGR or emissions stuff... and thus it won't pass emissions customs. i don't think i need to say more about this one. if the novelty of having a RHD mr2 in the US is something that you want... then go for it, but it will be expensive.

there are special considerations made for armed forces. The Motorex skyline example isn't exactly comparable, because the skyline has never been available here, and there aren't similar makes and models available for crash testing and DOT certificaiton testing. Check with the DOT of the state you're returning to.
