Head Gasket Problem

I was having a problem with my fan not working once in a while and the temp guage rising to the top. Shutting the car off and back on would usually fix the problem, but last trip it kept persisting and I ended up with a loud engine knock which turned out to be a blown head gasket. Told the service tech about the heating and he said it was due to having anti-freeze leaking into my cylinders. I don't think this is right, but I had my head sent out and a new gasket put in and it hasn't heated since. Wondering if the heating was due to a bad relay switch to the fan, but suprised that it's not still doing it. I suppose I should put a new relay in just to be safe. Wouldn't want to blow another gasket at $1300 a pop. I suppose that the heating was the cause of blowing the gasket?

Re: Head Gasket Problem

I would say the overheating warped the head and caused the head gasket to leak.

Re: Head Gasket Problem

The fan was coming on most of the time. There was just the odd time it wouldn't come on, and then it would heat. Shut the engine off and start it and the fan would work again. Also once in a while I could hear a squack coming from the hood. Thought it might be the fan. This is a 1992 with a 2.5 liter 4.
