found a free mod today

i got a k&n air filter fo it just to try one out, i noticed that on the inside of my intake tube there was a honey comb looking thing looked kinda like a filter and it looks like it could restrict air flo, so i took it out. just slides out of the intake tube. i put the airbox lid on and started the car to see if it would cause any issues. it ran fine, and actually it ran and sounded better. i dont know what that little thing was but its not needed. thought id share with you, i just threw mine in the trash.

It's part of your emissions, basically cleans the air that goes out your intake when your engine is turned off. You might gain .01hp from that mod. The new 05 Mustangs also have that honey comb.

i noticed a change in exhaust tone and better throttle response, could it be from removing that thing?

LOL The thread said "found free mod today", and I thought you found that Hypsi or Formula were let go! Still good news on what you did find though. I took that off of my pop's 2000 2500 6.0l truck, but we didn't notice a difference. I thought with that large of a motor we would, but we didn't, so I put it back in. Just fyi, it protects the hot and cold sensors in the MAF, so if any dirt gets past, there could be trouble since they are so fragile, but that is very doubtful.

...lol, well a buddy said some of the fox body's had a air silencer that was simular to that honeycomb thing. i got it back out of the trash in fear that i may need it later.

Good idea. Also, speaking of air silencers, sometimes cars have a deep well that looks like a reservoir or something. It hangs off of the air intake, and is molded into it. It is also an air silencer, and if cut off(I know, sounds primitive) you will gain some hp, and that classic whistle that a cold air makes. That is probably because it essentially makes a cold air system. They are put on there for people that don't want to hear any engine noise.

I believe silverstangs is correct. On my Mustang GT, I seemed to see a slight improvement in low end and a definite change in the engine tone by removing the rubber boot located between the air box and the opening into the fender well. I also installed a K&N filter shortly afterwards. The car seems to breathe better and I sort of like the added sound effects with the restrictive boot removed - but I eventually plan to do something to replace the stock airbox, intake tube and intake plenum/throttle body. I plan to check the forums for advice on that when I have more time. Thanks for the recommendation, you are on the right track.

Im glad that you metioned that thing on the intake hose. my tacoma has one and i have been wondering what the hell it is. i will cut that thing off then, my truck has a 2.7 inline 4, dohc, and its way to quiet.

Yes, after you remove the airbox assembly - it just pulls off - no cutting required. You can save the part to reinstall if you change your mind. Doing this will leave an opening between the airbox and the fender intake area. I don't believe that pulling a mix of air from the fender (cooler fresh air) and underhood area (warmer air) will offset any gain. Long term, I am looking at buying a Volant air intake kit myself - but they run about $225. Good luck.
