Need help with 88 Celica GT

There's a 1988 Celica GT across town I'm thinking about buying. The people are asking 500, but they'll take 400 for it. Theese people have owned it since new. They're an older couple, so they probably didn't beat on it too much. It only has 203,000 kms on it. The man who owns it put a new clutch in it 3 years ago, but has only put 6000 kms on it since he installed it. It has a new alternator 6 months ago. The only things I can see that are wrong with it is the rear struts need replacing, fuel pump buzzes and there's some rust on the passenger side floor that needs to be taken care of. I took it for a spin around the block and it sure does have nice pickup. It's got the 2 liter 16 valve engine under the hood. What kind of horsepower does this engine have? Also, what kind of fuel economy and reliability can I expect to get out of this car?

Re: Need help with 88 Celica GT

with that many miles, depending on the care that was takin w/ it: maybe 120-125hp, mileage, if everything(sensors, plugs, etc) are working correctly:25-30mpg. fuel pump, junkyard $40-50,plus mine(1990) has an access panel under the back seat->easy access/easy changing. struts might set you back some cash, and rust is rust, but hell $400+$300(sears for the suspension)+$40(fuel pump)+primer & $200 to earl sheib

damn nice ride for under a grand. --id do it.

I took some pics this afternoon when I brought the car home. Check 'em out.

Re: Need help with 88 Celica GT

Yeah, I'm both of those names. No idea how that happened. I've seen cars 6-7 years newer rust way worse than my Celica. If I get at it and take care of it now before it gets any worse, I think it'll be ok, that's what I'm hoping for anyway.
