Re: 4 wheel drive light flashes

mine is doing exactly the same thing, anyone else have this happen. what is the solution?
I don't think it's a mechanical problem because of the erratic way the light flashes I think it's electrical. maybe a sensor or something. the 4wd system works fine just the annoying lights on the dash.. I have a photo of my daughter covering the lights.

my solution

ok, here's what I had to do to correct this issue.
as per a mechanic in the dealer there are two possible causes.
the first i tried changing the two electronic switches on the topside of the transfer case. they were about 50 dollars each. you have to loosen the cross member to get to one of them. a fairly easy job.
that didn't help
then I changed the solenoid for the 4wd whichis located just off the airfilter, mounted to the frame in there. if you have the new part in your hand then the location of the old one is easy to identify. this part is about 75.00. and real easy to change.
that did it for me.
i did all this after some electronic mechanic charged me 300 dollars for a two week fix. then he wanted another 175. at that point I decided to do it my self which ended up costing me about the same but it's fixed now.
that light was driving me crazy and it also was causing the abs to not work after a while which is dangerous.
hope this helps
let me know.
my truck is a sport 2000

I am having the same issue ad would like to replace the parts but do not know what to ask for. Can you tell me what the part names were so I can ask for them at the dealer?

Thank you

Re: 4 wheel drive light flashes

Before you do anything read the link below and do some homework to determine what the problem is, otherwise you are just guessing and part swapping. Many people have had this problem before.

Re: 4 wheel drive light flashes

I used the wifes 2001 Montero Sport today after our first snow and when I attempted to use the 4HI the only thing that would happen as I threw the 4x4 lever ahead was to have the indicator light flash breifly and go out,no four wheel drive. The front driveshaft would engage but that's it. If I would hold pressure forward on the 4x4 lever the light would stay on and there would be power to the front. After checking out the above link (good one by the way) I figured the likely culprit was the actuator rod since the four wheel hasn't been used for quite awhile. After pulling the dust boot back and lubing it and making shure it would move the light would flash a bit when engaging the 4x but eventualy stay on and I'd have four wheel drive WOOHOOO I fixed it....but what's up with the friggin anti lock brake light coming on now %#*&^!**.???? The ABS light will go out however after disengaging the 4x.
I ran out of time to check the fluid levels in the differential and transfer case,I did notice initialy when I'd push the lever ahead I would hear a clicking sound likely the selenoid. If the fluids are up what would someone in the know recommend, replacing the selenoid or possibly the vacuum type actuator thingy??? Thanks a bunch if you can help!
