V6 transmissions
Are the Standard transmissions from the 88-95 chevy full size with V6s the same as the ones from the V8's. Cause i might want to do an engine swap from a V6 truck with a standard, to a 350 from my 95. But my 95 has an automatic transmission so will i have to get a new computer or reprogram?

there are two different trannys for these years of truck. What year are we talking? 88 - 92 is the 700r4 the newer is the 4L60E.

4L60E is just a renamed 700R4--Same bell housing and body.

my 95 came from the dealership brand new in 1995 with a 700r4 transmission so they must of still used the 700r4 till 95 in some trucks.
I want to put my 350 into a truck with a standard transmission. And will it work if i do an engine swap with a v6 truck with a standard.

um yeah the 700r4 was my dads transmission that came with his 350-powered 90 silverado. its a very strong unit. a friend of mine is looking into putting one in place of his turbo350 so that he can have overdrive. he has a beefed up 454 with over 400 horsepower and he says that it should hold up ok. hes been beating the living crap out of that turbo350 and its still shifting strong and no clunks or nothin. mine is a turbo400 that works awesome. as for the engines, i dont know about that. i would assume it would work just fine except maybe the engine mounts might have to be relocated farther up on the frame? other than that it should be the same and moving the mounts wouldnt even be that hard if the frame has the holes for it already since they probably didnt make separate frames for the v6's they probably just drilled all the possible hole combinations into one frame and use whatever ones they need. it should work great.

It will work fine. You just need everything that pertains to the 350 off of one truck to swap over to the other truck. This includes the radiator and fan shroud as well as the engine to frame mounts.If you can find a computer in a junkyard from a 350 with a manual that would work best.You will need a new flywheel and pilot bearing. A new clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing are recommended whenever you have the engine out. Be aware however that there were several different manual transmissions available in these years--there were heavy duty and light duty 4- and 5-speeds. A v-6 truck will have the light duty transmission usually.

Yes I am talking about an automatic, and a 700r4 and a 4l60e are totally different machines, yes they have the same bell housing and bolt pattern, but the are different, if they werent they would still call it a 700r4, believe me I know all about these particular trannies.

Like I said the 4L60E is just a 700r4 updated to be totally electronic. GM changed the name from 700r4 to 4L60, and updated the name to 4L60E when it became electronically shifted. Still don't beleive me? Check out this site then:
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/4l60e.htm The 700r4 got a bad reputation which was well deserved in its early years. I remember trying to drive an 83 up a steep hill on an interstate. The tranny would hunt for gears and couldn't decide where it wanted to be. GM knew there were problems and kept upgrading them until they actully were pretty tough about 87 or so. They also started telling people not to tow anything in overdrive. The 4l80E is another story. It is a turbo 400 updated with a small overdrive clutch pack added in the front of the transmission. All other clutches are the exact same as a turbo 400. Of course the 4l80E is electronically shifted as well. Oh-- btw I have rebuilt these transmissions and know whereof I speak. |
