making an intake truck runs bad????

i put together an intake and the truck is sluggish, seems to be getting to much or not enough air. even if i put a different air filter than the stock box it runs like crap. do i need to have a computer to change the air fuel mixture or what? and what exhaust catback systems sound good without getting alot of popping and cackling? and where is the best place to get these. i have a 2002 silverado 5.3 ext cab 2wd. thanks for all the help in advance.

i went to menards and bought some rubber elbows to get the bend and a short section of pvc to go to the filter and i got a filter from advance auto. and i had the mass air flow sensor hooked up in line and it ran terrible. so i put all the factory stuff back on and it ran fine. so i took the air box out again and put just the new filter on and it ran like crap again. i don't know if the filter is letting to much air in or not enough.
