2002 Stratus SE 2.7L
Any info on the 2002 Stratus SE 2.7 and overheating problems? When I bought the car new it overheated at approx. 2,000 miles(hot enough to boil over out of resevoir). The dealership said the problem was an air pocket in the cooling system. (yeah right)
Any how, 50,000 miles later it has happened again, and this time was low on antifreeze. About a gallon of water is what it took to fill er up again. My concern is where did the coolant go, considering I have no leaks? Is it possibly a small crack in the in the head/head gasket caused by the first time it overheated and is going out the exhaust? I am looking for any info that will help when I take it in to the dealer before the warranty expires.

Probally needs a new engine now.The 2.7 is a piece of junk anyway.Daimler Chrysler has not done anything about the 2.7 and there is a lawyer planning a class action lawsuit against Daimler Chrysler if he can get clients.

when you're driving, do you see white smoke coming from the tailpipe? That'll tell you if you're heads are leaking coolant into the cylinder walls. Test your heater as well, do you smell coolant inside the cabin with it on? If you do, your heater core could be leaking and that can cause an overheat as well; in addition to that, you could see coolant leaking inside the passenger compartment.

Thanks for the replies. After further troubleshooting I think the problem was a loose cap on the reservoir. It seems that on a closed system, if the cap on the reservoir is loose the coolant will overflow out of the reservoir, even though the temp. is normal. I'm not sure how the cap on the reservoir loosened up. I will have to keep an eye on it. Over a week now and no problems. I even let it idle for an hour with the outside temp 80 degrees.

On an different note, be sure to run synthetic oil in that motor if you aren't already. The 2.7's have a bad history of sludge buildup and engine failure due to poor oil circulation when using regular oils. Synthetics hold up better and do not sludge. I think some improvements were made after a while, but might want to look into your motor under your oil cap and see if any sludge visable anyway, if using regular oil.
