How To Brakes Need Help
ok so i have my pads, anti squeal compaound, torque wrench, brake fluid, etc. Now has any1 in here done their own brakes? It seems very simple and i have done brakes 1 other time on an older monte carlo so im sure its a little different. The main reason i ask is that a mechanic told me that the rear brakes in the impala are really shitty and if the caliper is "stuck" then u need to get another one. I didn't really have time to have a convo. about it so im asking you guys is he bullshiting me or what?

He isn't bullshitting you, the rear brakes of my '00 had locked up calipers, only had to replace the pin in the caliper though, not the whole thing. It all depends on how bad, if they are bad... it is. I would say have it checked to see if the caliper's are 'stuck' or not.

ok well maybe you can help me. I jacked my car up and got the wheel off, drained 1/3 of the brake fluid, and grabbed my large C-Clamp. I took the clamp and put it on the back of the outer pad(the pad you can see after u take the wheel off) and i put the other end on the inside of the caliper(the part that looks like a small cylinder facing towards the engine) Now i'm confused with a few things......1st Am i putting the C-Clamp in the right place? 2nd How much do i compress the pads into the piston? Is there any noticible way to tell? 3rd which bolt on the inside of the caliper am i taking out (note the picture) the red or blue bolt? and the caliper slides open which direction blue or red arrow?
 I know how to install the pads and put the caliper back together but is there anything different about the rear caliper? How would i be able to tell if the caliper is "stuck"?

Pat there should be 2 tourque nuts on both sides of the caliper on the back thats the only thing you have to remove and there is no need to drain the fluid just remove the cover uptop now you need to bleed your brakes !!! anyways once removed get a pair of channel locks and open up the caliper just enough to fit it over the new rotor remove old rotor install new one slide the caliper back on bolt up repeat

i downloaded the file from alldata and i can't seem to figure it out. It says u need to drain 1/3 of the fluid from the master cylinder after u take the wheel off. If i get the chance tomorrow i will try to do my brakes and take some pics hope it works out better this time lol.

Hey, you do need to drain some fluid cause if you don't and you compress the piston you will have brake fluid going everywhere, and that is harsh on paint. You don't have to bleed the brakes unless you let the master cylinder go dry and you suck in air. I didn't and have had no problems.
compress the piston until it is flush with the caliper. I had to get a heavy duty c-clamp (big!) and really turn on it to make the piston move. It didn't harm anything. Ya know, I think I took out both bolts and really only needed to remove one. It won't hurt to remove both. Took a little more time. I think the top one is the one to remove. I didn't remove the brake line from the caliper, just tied it up so it wouldn't fall. That's about it. If ya need more pm me and I'll send my email address to ya.
