PLEASE HELP!! Odometer Fraud or Clerical Error?
I recently purchased a car, a 97 Nissan Maxima, it has around 65,000 on it when I got it.
I did a carfax report after learning about such a thing right after buying it. This is what I found: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/FSBO.cfm?r...FX000008759065 Now, I asked a mechanic about it, he said it could be a clerical error . Anyone who can give any advice on this is greatly appreciated. A couple of things to point out, it was auctioned 3 years after it was purchased at 132K???? in 3 years??? is that possible. Another thing is the carfax report is kind of confusing, was its original owner a person or was it up for lease. If it was up for lease, what company leases cars with an average of 45K per year?? Then again, it is still possible. Advice needed, PLEASE! |

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Odometer Fraud or Clerical Error?
if it was a business vehicle then that kind of high mileage isn't too out of the ordinary. but the discrepency with the change in mileage would concern me, that car could have as much as 100K extra miles on it.

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Odometer Fraud or Clerical Error?
Quote:
"CARFAX found an inconsistent odometer reading. CARFAX is uncertain whether this reading represents a rollback or a source-level clerical error." What can that say? To me it says: Smbdy trimmed the odometer. Clerics dont do that... mechanics or anybody having toothpicks. Everybody wants to get better price. Here one mag made research on 10 random selected mercedeses, each having "about 200k". The search came out; every single one was over 800k, half 1.5mil! Not saying this is your story, but I never believe odometers, sorry. My best friend at work, sound guy: I found out that he had taken the wire off to have less mileage for better re sales price. Oh boy, now trust that man... But hello, is there a man anywhere? 45k is 'normal' salesman drive.

don't worry about it....
I work at carmax and we pull an Autocheck (Like Carfax) on every car we purchase. What happed was when the clerk at the auction put the miles in, it appears he/she put in the wrong miles.
You may be able to locate the place were the car was auctioned and request an odometer disclosure statement. They should be able to find the documents based on your vin number. Once you get that, have them contact Carfax and correct the error. You'll have to stay on them and get a written confirmation from both parties that the error was corrected. It may not be possible because it was a while back, but give it a try and be persistant. You would want this corrected because it affects the resale value on your car...nothing else. If you have your title, it may have a brand for mileage. Any brand on a title is a death call. So make sure you get the correct documents after it is corrected. Who did you purchase the car from? I can't stress enough it is ALWAYS important to get a COMPLETE and FULL CARFAX on ANY used car you plan to purchase. Good luck
