setting timing on new head

hey guys... finally got that cylender head off of that 92 achieva (2.3L SOHC) that ive been working on for about the past 2 or 3 weeks now... found that it indeed did have a crack or some sort of damage that i couldnt see with the naked eye because of an immense build up of some sort of coolant residue or whatever... it was dry but very nasty looking and the head gasket was also missing a section of gasket material between 2 of the cylenders, so it was a combination of problems that caused all this crap, heh. anyway, now that i bought a freshly reconditioned/remachined head to replace the cracked one with, i suddenly realized that since its obviously not the same head that came off this motor, how am i supposed to know how to set the timing on the head? i cannot risk it to just guess at it and hope that i dont bend the valves, etc, because then i have to pay for it plus tear it all back down which i dont really feel up to doing, lol. i just need to know how to set the timing on it once im ready to put the head on the motor... oh yea, forgot to mention that i already know that i have to line up the crankshaft marking with the marking on the block or whatever to get one of the pistons to TDC, i think the manual said it was cylender #1 that would be at TDC, but i dont remember offhand. thanks guys!

I am getting ready to put the new head back together and then either later today or maybe tomarrow i am hoping to put the head back on the motor... but i still really need to know how to actually set the timing so that i dont end up having the pistons come up and smack the valves and bend them up like this head originally had happen to it to its previous owner... cant afford to just guess at what im doing for this particular task, heh. If anyone can tell me how i can figure out what valves should and should not be open/closed while the crankshaft is lined up for with the mark on the block like the haynes manual said to do... only problem is i couldnt hold the proper timing with the bolts in the head like the manual says to, since i had to get an entirely different head. thanks in advance,

cmon guys... i know that someone on here has got to know the answer to my question... i realllly need to somehow find out how to set this timing thing asap cuz the guy im doing it for is getting very impatient and demands that i get his car finished soon, but i cant do anything else until i find out how to do it, heh. thanks in advance,
