Angry Stupid Lunartic

Today I was driving down to Eastbourne in Wellington and was at Sorento Bay when some fool hurtles out in a Mazda Famillia Turbo and floors it and passes me and a Nissan Sentra in front on a blind corner. However he didn't see a Citroen ZX coming the other way and braked hard, overshot the coner, hit a large rock and flipped onto the rocky shore by Lowry bay The driver (A young male) was unharmed but his car was totalled.

What pisses me off was the Pt Howard fire-brigade wasted thier time retrieving his car off the rocks, they should have let it float away, me and the Sentra driver handed in our witness statements and the guy was arrested.

I can't believe fools like this are allowed on our roads- he took no notice of the fact that the area arounf the Eastern Bays of Wellington has claimed two lives in recent months- he could have killed me, the Sentra or the ZX driver or (not that it matters) himself and my 6O7 would have got it in the arse from the Nissan Mistral SUV behind me had he head on'd the ZX

When I learned how dangerous driving can be, and how unprepared many young Kiwi drivers are for the raod, and how easy it is to get hold of a very powerful and very fast car.

be carefull, you are starting to sound like an old man.......pretty soon you will be trading in the shopping cart for a Commodore(with a towball for the caravan)and wearing a hat while driving....

As a member of the senior crew,it is my responsibility to rant and rave about the poor standard of driving among youg people today, but I still recall with some considerable glee some of the stupid and suicidal stunts that I pulled when I was an acne-riddled bag of hormones with a brand new driver's licence.

Have to agree that it is far too easy for youth to get excessive horsepower, compulsory insurance would go a long way to correcting this problem. We need to stiffen up on the driving test pass rate too.....make it so that only the top 50% per month qualify, and you could lift the general standard immensely.

Now when i agree to this being a young driver anyway , but if i were a punk that just got license i would have started flaming you , you know how you feel when you get the license , like you're the best driver in the world , even if you haven't even driven your first thousand kilometers yet... So you know how it goes , you can't make young pepole drive calmly and always safely and obeying all the traffic signs...

No, but you can but them in small under powered cars to limit the damage they can do to others. Then the only way they can go fast is by learning how to drive.

My 1st cars a 998cc Datsun cherry. It was anything but fast, but once I learned about things like cornering lines, and drifting, and the effect of throttle changes and sudden braking, I got extremly good at eeking every last bit of traction out of its 155/70/13 tyres, and making every single one of its 63hp count.

I know if I had what I have now for a 1st car I would have either killed myself or someone else. But learning how to drive first, in a much slower car, along with some practicle driving lessons on a race track has given me the skills and level of awareness needed to handle a car that is quite capable of getting me arrested in only 3rd gear. (while the datsun valve bounced 4th long before I could even lose my license)

poeple whinge and bitch about the younger drivers but in my experience the OLD drivers can be just as bad.

I had the experience of an elderly lady pulling out blindly at an intersection, without looking, right in front of me, forcing me to slam on all anchors (it was a 100kph zone). I followed her until she pulled over and asked her why the fuck she did that. All I got was the "I've been driving for the past 60 years without an accident" and the "you young drivers are just too dangerous" responses.

OLD DRIVERS SUCK (and no Mr T you are not that old YET)

I'm with ya 100% on that one Moppie, I think I've learned quite a bit (Of the basics any way) from driving my little Ford Tempo around so I'd feel somewhat confident hopping into a faster car. But there are people like a friend of mine who never took the time to really learn how to drive and now has a WRX and recently spun it through a field

I agree Moppie- my first car was a gutless 1300cc Mazda 323 3dr which I learnt nothing from and then a Yugo 45 Handihatch which I learnt even less in, but then in my Renault 19 Monaco I learnt all the ropes with its sweet 1.6 l engine and FWD and was thus prepared for my Corolla FX-GT that came next.

Why do teens need a CRX or Supra?????

What is wrong with a Peugeot 1O6, Coroll a XL, Sentra S, Citroen AX, Suzuki Swift or Ford Escort?????

That is all they need, they are economical, reliable and safe cars and are great t learn to drive in, while Teens put money into wiser things

The only problem I have with this thread is the STEREOTYPES. I am a young, male driver on first year of license and can admit to you and others that I am not the greatest driver. Better than some (no names) but we're talking severe minority. I have done stupid things, but have learnt from them. For my first car, I'm getting a gutless 1600cc. I completely agree with this threads geenral concensus, but once again, you can't stereotype like that. I know many people in the same catagory as me who drive sensibly and safely within the speed limit. I have done around 3000ks and at least 500 hours of driving now and still feel inexperienced so I don't know how you expect to improve driver training?? (these figures were completed over 3 years). I am lucky to have my life and my license still intact, but am going to work with that now.

Let the government tell you how much horsepower a teens car can have and next they'll regulate horsepower on everyones car. Next thing you know they'll be telling my what color underwear i can wear on a particular day of the week. Sure young inexperienced drivers(me for one) can be dangerous and stupid, but more laws won't fix that. Us youngin's do stupid things all the time, it doesn't require a car.

3000k's in 500 hours =average speed of 6km/h...........either one of your figures is incorrect or you are pushing the car,not driving it.

The only way to get experience is to rack up the km's.3000kms is very little when you consider the enormous variations in driving conditions....day/night,fine/wet,town/country,motorway/backroad,sealed/unsealed.....

the other area of experience that new drivers lack is hazard avoidance.Until you have had a few heart-stopping moments caused by the inept behaviour of the driver in front, you tend to follow too close and assume too much.Emergency stop practice is fine, but when it comes to the real thing, you have very little chance unless you keep your options open by allowing the guy in front plenty of room.

I did the Ks when I was still learning. Don't know how many I have done since. The 500 is all up since I've had my license (estimate based on per week). ANd there was a big variation in the types of driving as well. Dirt, Night, Wet, Low Light, Country, Long Distance etc.

oh how I remember being so Nieve and ignorant.

and now that I do 20x times the Ks in a year just for work what you have done in your life, and that 10x a year in my car I know just how ignorant I was, and have a pretty good idea what would have happened had I been let loose in a powerful car first off.

In the 8 years Iv been driving Iv probobly done over 250,000ks and I know im still not as good a driver as I could be, or as experianced as I could be.
