A BIG one!
SL1 (SOHC) or SL2 (DOHC)?

What size tip is the pepboys muffler?

Save yourself alot of money, go to e-bay and search for a 4" tip universal muffler or larger tip... mine sounds good! (its my avatar/picture at left, if its not there click my name) Its a straight through muffler (no bends) get one with a removable silencer (I took mine out the first day and haven't considered going back) It was cheap but it is great. Also, ask the shop how much they want to put on full exhaust (that'll give you a good sound too)

Might check out intakes on e-bay too, I'm getting one once I have the money, and It'll give you a slightly deeper "throatier" sound.

just as a tip that I should have followed, have the muffler shop that welds it on mount it at a downward angle, for better sound.

Back in 10/04 you said you weren't planning on keeping this car long... Thats when I got my '97 SL1 and thought the same thing

E-bay!

Is the pep boys one a straight flow-through design?
here are some mufflers that I would deem acceptable to put on mine, all have 4" outlet tips
Take out the silencer (duh)

I felt a power increase with my new muffler (may have been a plecebo effect), but with the new meaner sound, I felt like the car had better performance. Also, I suggested getting intake to counter the effect and get a better sound...he will be getting more air through the engine, so he needs less restriction getting air out of the engine...

Actually It will increase power in a high gear when you do need to be pushing more exhaust through it.

I wouldn't take my muffler back off for the little bit of torque that you do gain with restriction.

some little 1/2" tip muffler is not going to increase performance...
and your Catalytic converter still keeps enough backpressure you're not really messin with much.
if you went with like full 3" exhaust and stripped your cat or ran straight headers or something, without doing any kind of performance mods to the engine then Yeah, you'd lose alot of backpressure and some torque...

In short,
he's lookin for a better sound, already has a 3 1/2" tip, hes not going to lose anything, except the old sound...
No, it wont "kill" the torque...
