how to power powerful Subs

for my regenecy im looking @ 2 Pioneer 12' subs. 1000W Rms and 3000W peak. this is @ 4ohms. What sort of amps do i need? do i need a 3000W @ 4ohm for each? or can a run a lower ohm amp? and what kind of amplifiers do yall recommend.

as far as I know, those are spl subs, which means they will sound like ass on music...they'll just get really loud

If you still want to go with them, you would want somewhere around 2000rms at 2ohm. Not too many choices at that impedance, us amps is the only company that comes to mind.

Yup, and pay absolutely NO attention to anything ever says PEAK. The only power rating for subwoofers or amplifiers that matters is RMS!

So, I'd look into something else in all honesty...

Re: how to power powerful Subs

actually im thinking those woofers are dual 4 ohm, not just 4 ohm. so this means that if you had a pair you could wire them in a series for a final impeadence of one ohm. and yeah there are a lot more amps that do 2kw at one ohm. and yeah those subs are just for getting loud as balls, so if youre into shaking blocks thats cool but if you want some sound quality there are subs that will get as loud that will still sound better.

Re: how to power powerful Subs

oh yeah they are dual 4, so you would wire them in parallel and get an amp that does around 2000rms at 1ohm

Re: how to power powerful Subs

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-...pedance=DVC4x2

check out the 1st diagram.. notice all positives are wired together and all negatives together.

basically wiring positive coils together and negative coils together to the amp. also, for every time you do this, your final impeadance is divided by two.

so in this case, you have two dual 4 ohms subs. wire the sub itself in parallel, you now have a 2 ohm load to each sub. now, wire each "2 ohm" sub together and you now have a final impeadence of 1 ohm.

sorry if its confusing, i tried to simplify it and may have ended up just making it sound weird.. im definately no electrical engineer

It means basically to connect all the positive (red) terminals on the subs to the positive connector on the amp, and all the negative (black) terminals to the negative connector. If you were to do series on a DVC sub, you'd be connecting one positive to the amp, then the negative to the other positive, and then the last negative to the negative on the amp (or the next sub if you wanted to go to 16 Ohms for some unknown reason). Somewhere in the past threads we had a whole debate about this, and I had a bunch of equations to support what I was saying. Don't feel like looking for it though.

::edit:: darn it, he beat me.

Re: how to power powerful Subs

wow that's a screwed up budget if I've ever seen one

I have almost twice as much invested in the HU and front stage than the substage, and I still feel like I spent too much on the substage in comparison. You do realize that 90% of your music is being reproduced by those front speakers, and the other 10% is from the sub right? And you're spending 10x more on the substage....that makes sense.

Re: how to power powerful Subs

^^^^^ Agreed...

You may want to consider balancing out your system a little more, but I guess that's totally up to you. As it is with what you're suggesting, all you're going to hear is bass. A HU cannot supply enough power to your speakers to make that setup sound even remotely decent, so maybe you should look into budgeting for an amp to power a nice set of component speakers. I usually tell people to forget about rear fill, but again, that's personal preference.

Out of those other subs you suggested, the GTi gets my vote, although I hear the Type X is also a very nice sub. A single W15GTi in a custom ported enclosure paired with a GTi component set, all powered by JBL/Crown amps would be very nice indeed...
