diagnostic codes

I took my 97 cherokee to get a emission inspection it failed due to
diagnostic code p0743 -torque converter clutch circuit electrical and
code-p0740- torque converter circuit malfunction .
does anyone know what this means and how to fix the problem someone
told me to un hook the battery and it should reset the computer and then retake the test is this true?

Re: diagnostic codes

If you just disconnect the battery and go for the inspection right away, you probably will get rejected because you reset everything in the pcm including some monitors that the system runs.if they don't run before you go for the inspection, they probably will reject it because it wont be in carb readiness.I would suggest that you go ahead and disconnect the battery to reset it but then drive the jeep for a few days to give the system a chance to run all of its tests. Also make sure the check engine light doesn't come on.If it's all good, then go for it.one more thing, one of the tests is a catalyst monitor and that usually needs the jeep to be driven between 55-70 mph at around 10% load on the engine for like 5 or 6 minutes. So if you do all stop and go driving then it might have a hard time completing that. But if your check engine light comes on then you need to fix it.

Re: diagnostic codes

Thanks for the tip also last week I took my jeep to
get it fix they said the engine light was not working
and in order to fix the code problem it had to be fixed first. could this mean there is a real problem with the transmission even though I haven,t had any problems with it slipping?
