what sensor is this?

On a 97 lt1.....the driver side head, toward the front, there is a sensor, does anyone know what it is. I have a coolant temp sendor in the water pump....the knock sensor is on the other side on the bottom of block. Whatever it is, it only has one wire going to it...and the sensor itself only has one prong....cant find it in the book anywhere....that is the location of a coolant temp on a ls1 but that would mean i have two...

Re: what sensor is this?

there is usually more than one coolant tempurature sensor. Many different things operate off of the coolant temp. I believe that the sensor in your head would be for the cooling fans, however i dont know LT1's all that well, so id wait for someone who knows more about them than i do to comment.

Re: what sensor is this?

Don't have a lt1 anymore, but if I remember corectly, that is indeed a temperature SWITCH, not sensor. As stated above, usually used to turn other devices on/off, ie fans. etc. On mine, the swithc was a grounding type, so when the switched closed, the fans would come on. You could check this by removing the wire going to your sensor and grounding it. Betcha your fans turn on. Hope this helps!

I also don't know much about the LT1's, but if it is the same as a third gen, that sensor is going to go to the gauge in the dash. It should have only one wire, as the sensor grounds itself to the block. The one in the water pump is going to the computer, and 3rd gens have another in the passanger side head above the knock sensor that is for the cooling fan...
