Broken Wire- Where does it lead?

I have located a brocken wire on my 97 5.7L Vortec and I don't know where it goes.

It comes from the wiring conduit under the "Vortec" shroud and looks like it should lead to the alternator(?) but I can't see where it would hook up. It is a thin black wire with a rectangular harness (or something) in the middle. Can anyone help? Truck seems to be running fine with no problems.

Does this wire have a hard insulation that looks like it's been waxed? If so it's a high temp wire that probally goes to the thermocoupler (drivers side engine just below valve cover) or it could be the eye connector ground that goes on the water inlet fitting bolt. Is the wire actually broken? or just a loose wire that has no destination? some wires in the harness may not be in use because they are for other options that you dont have. That way they can mass produce universal wire harness for many models.
