suspension clunking

When Im driving and hit a bump Im hearing a clunking sound from the suspension. I could be wrong about it being from the suspension. Im going to check it out tomorrow but I wanted to know what I should check for. I know its not the strut mounts I just replaced those. It sounds like its coming from the front. I have a 2002 cavalier 2.2L with bilstein full coilovers.

Re: suspension clunking

What are you using for Struts? Its also possible it is the strut mounts. The 95-99 are the best mounts to use on the cars. For some reason the 2000+ are very crappy.

Im using bilstein struts and springs. Its the full coilover setup from mantapart. I just replaced the strut mounts about 2 weeks ago so I dont think its the mount. It doesent really sound like its the mount.

Re: suspension clunking

Well from what i heard, coil overs are nortorious for making clunking noises. There is a modification you can do to the strut mounts to stop this. If its not a loose bolt, or blown strut, its def. your strut mounts. I have never done it before, but last fall i bought a set off of EVENT on JBO which were all done to them. From what i can see its involves silicone and a few other things.. Lemme see if i can get the link for you.

Re: suspension clunking

I will try that and see if it helps or not. What are the best brand of mounts for the cav. Im using gabriel right now and Ive had them for less than a month and there gone. Ive heard that 95 - 99 mounts are the best but would factory mounts from gm be better that something you could get at a parts store.

Im going to try to check the suspension next week but what should I be looking for. Ive heard that suspension clunking could be a bad cv axle. How would I check for that. Can you tell that a strut mount is bad just by looking at it. How would you check for a blown strut.

Re: suspension clunking

I just poped the hood open and I think my problem was looking at me. The strut rod was sticking out about 3 inches higher than it should. I looked at the gabriel mount and the stock mount and the factory mount has a metal piece that would have prevented this. Im thinking about either monroe or gm mounts. Im thinking that the gm mount is probably going to be a better choice
