Grinding sound coming from front of 2000 Pontiac Grand AM GT
I have a 2000 Grand Am GT (48000 miles), and have a grinding sound coming from the front of the car in the direction of both wheels. The sound gets louder as I turn to the left (sound comes from the right wheel) or as I turn to the right (sound comes from the left wheel). I also hear it when I am coming to a stop. It originally only happened when I turned left (right side noise), so just today I replaced the hub assembly on the right side wheel. Afterwards, the sound became evident on both sides, but louder, especially when turning harder, in either direction, and on the wheel opposite I was turning (eg, left turn, right wheel and vice versa). I've jacked the car up and put it in drive to see if i can locate the noise, but it disappears when there is no pressure on the wheels... My brake pads are getting thinner, but they're not bare, and I already have the pads in hand and will change them Monday after I turn both front rotors, but I dont believe that is the problem. Also, the grinding sound increases as I accelerate...
Any advice would truly be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

This may sound odd but I have something for you to check. I have a 2000 Grand AM GT. I keep hearing a noise in the front of the car. I thought it was my brakes but I heard it even when I wasn't hitting the breaks. Anyhow, I could only hear the noise at low speeds. I checked the breaks but I had plenty of pad left. Since I was still under warranty I took the car into the dealer. You never guess what it was.
Dirt! I didn't believe it at first but now I do. They said dirt gets between the rim and tire (something to do with the wheel/tire combination) and makes the noise. All they did is remove the tire and clean the rim. Noise is gone. I noticed it came back about a month ago but after driving a lot in the rain it dissappeared again. I hope the solution to your problem is this easy. Mike

grinding noise
I also had the same grinding noise coming from the front drivers side tire. It seemed to get louder over time. I took it to the mechanic and was told the rotor was warped. Sure enough, when a new rotor was put on the noise stopped. However, about 3 weeks later, I had new brakes put on and was told the rotor was warped again. Since having the new brakes put on they squeak. I have gone back to the mechanic twice, they can't find what is making them squeak, but they are definatley still squeaking and the new rotor is warped after 3 weeks.

The cure to the problem was by replacing the stock Goodyear RSA's... The tire/wheel combo is the culprit - I just got some BF Goodrich g-Force TA KDWS's about a year ago, and not only are they cheaper than the stock Eagle RSA's, they're 100 TIMES BETTER! Better grip, better handling, and they run a hell of a lot better in the rain and snow than the RSA's... The best place for tires and comparisons and all that is at www.tirerack.com - they blow everyone away.

hey.....my car started making that grinding noise around left turns and it would kick-back a little too. Then all of a sudden when I tried to accelerate at a stop sign....I couldn't get anywhere. When i pushed on the gas, the car wouldnt move and it sounded like something was not catching something. It made a loud noise and wouldnt go anywhere. My uncle thought it was the transmission but I still want to check the CV joint and do it myself so I dont hafta pay outta the pocket....

If it makes the noise only making left turns, then your situation may be different than mine. Have you ever replaced your stock tires?
Your problem sounds like a couple of other posts on another site, www.grandamgt.com, in their Technical Q&A forum.
