Brakes/Rotor Question??

Hi,

Are there certain brands of brake pads/ rotors I should get for my VW? I have a 2001 Jetta VR6 and at 28,000 miles, it's in need of new rear rotors and brake pads. The dealer wants to charge $400.00 to do the job but I am going to change them myself. Do I need any special tools? Are there certain brands I should use or can I just buy them from my local autoparts store?

Re: Brakes/Rotor Question??

1-800-VW-PARTS will get you stock parts, genuine VW parts even. When I had to replace mine I upgraded to slotted/cross-drilled rotors and pads designed to go with. Cost about the same as stock parts, and under extreme load it's a significant difference even with the same size rotor and stock caliper. I suggest Bahn Brenner if you're going the performance route, they aren't noisy and hold up through my worst.

Is it easy to replace the OEM rotors with the slotted/cross-drilled rotors? I am installing them on my own.

Re: Re: Re: Brakes/Rotor Question??

Very very easy. Take off the wheel, two bolts for the caliper and a phillips screw to keep the rotor aligned with the lug holes. Seriously, if you have ever changed the brake pads you were there.
