Daytime Running Lights
well im kinda glad i ran across this site. i was searching for a troubleshooting site and found this one, yall seem pretty helpful. but anywho, i have a 1996 Chevy Silverado and about 2 months ago my daytime running lights just stopped working. as you all know they are the same bulbs as the regular headlights without the oranges. my DRL's stopped workin but my headlight works fine when i turn them on. i know about the override switch, that dont work, and my parking break is not engaged, and i checked the fuse and it looks fine. what else could cause the problem... any suggestions?

Re: Daytime Running Lights
There is a resistor that drops the voltage (around 8V, I think) so the DRLs aren't as bright as the regular headlights. It's possible that resistor burned open.

It was the DRL diode assembly on mine. Headlights worked fine, the DRL dash indicator light was on and all the fuses were fine. The diode is mounted to the steel rail under the dash slightly right of the steering column (looks like a little heat-sink with a wire connector attached). I got the part from GMpartsdirect and that took care of it.

I looked it up on gmpartsdirect.com and the 1996 seems to have a different listing than mine which is a 1997. On mine it was called the Diode assembly, but the parts listing for 1996 seems different and shows two parts.
I added what they call the DRL resistor to my cart and it called it a diode once it was in there. Part# 15043231 for $15.60. Seems very cheap compared to the part I needed. The DRL module was part# 12088547 for $33.02. That seems more in line with the price of my 1997 Diode assembly, but I'm not sure what to make of it. |
