Unhappy fan loud!

I have a 1997 Yukon. When i go to drive it while it's not warmed up the fan (radiator fan i assume is what it's called) is really loud and whiney, but after about 2 miles of driving it sounds fine. ive heard alot of trucks do this before. it has been like this ever since i bought it.

i didnt know if maybe the fan was supposed to be that loud at first for a reason or what. i know the fan is run by a beltoff the engine and thought mabe switching to an electrical fan might fix it. plus ive heard that you gain better gas mileage and free about about 25 horses by switching to an electric fan.

Does anyone else have this problem with the loud fan sound or know how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: fan loud!

Hi,
the fan clutch may need to be replaced. It should not engage (and make all that whooshing noise) when it is cold.
Please have that checked out.
I would not mess with electric fans, to me that is a lot of money for not really fixing any problem.
Take care, Eggert

Re: fan loud!

you'll actually get about 1-2 horsepower at the MOST by switching to an electric fan.

I would check the clutch like eggert said
