Question Your Opinion on Extended Warranties

Hi everyone,

I would like to know your opinions and/or experiences with extended warranties on your Silverados.

With our previous two cars ('00 GTP & '01 Montana) we purchased the extended warranties at time of purchase and took advantage of both contracts. Both cars had trans problems of some sort with the van's blowing out completely at 40K (after 5 gripes to the dealer about a 'metallic noise' coming from the trans; they said 'everything looks good').

Anyways...I just bought an '04 Silverado Z71 4x new last September and wanted to know about anyone's experience with maintenance or breakage on their Silverados. Granted, you shouldn't NEED an extended warranty, but with my past experience I tend to lean towards having one once I near 3/36.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Bob-

I guess it depends on your luck. I bought one and haven't had any problems yet, my buddy didn't and he has had his tranny worked on 3 times in the last year. My parents bought one and thank god they did. The computer went bad and caused serious problems to the motor. The dealership was great when they took it in and replaced the computer, wiring harness, tranny and engine. GM sent them a letter of apology and coupons for free service. There car had 35K miles on it, if I remember right the original warranty was for 30K or 3 yrs whichever is first.

My truck is still under the 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty, but I want to get an extension. How do I do that?

read the book that came with the truck and take a look at the extended warranties.

the one the dealer tryed selling me only coverd parts of the truck over the standerd warrantie. all for a extra $900 dollers. the trany is coverd for 70k miles. in the extened it was coverd for 100k but after you paid to have it looked at and it was up to them to deside if you got your cash back. I can put 20k miles on a truck in a year.

I can put the same amount in the truck fund, thats savings bonds for truck repairs and have enuff in 3 years to cover most of the major work. heck the last time i did it made a down payment on this truck.
