Lightbulb 1999 ford Taurus Keys and Keyless Entry

I bought a 99 Taurus and the only key I got with it does not work on anything but the ignition. It has a keypad on the door but the code is pulled off the module under the dash so I can't retrieve it and have no idea what the code is ...My questions are...Can FORD make a set of keys for me using the VIN number or anything? And can they reprogram the keyless entry pad with a code for me to use? And HOW much would this cost me if they can do this?

Yes, they can. If you have the SecuriLock system (the keys with the RFID chip in them)--and I think you do--then I suspect you're looking at approximately $250-$350 for 2 to 3 brand new keys and a reprogrammed keyless code. You said that your first key only works in the ignition (which is very strange), but if the first key is really usable for programming then it may only be $200, give or take. Ripoff? Yes. Probably one of the biggest ripoffs in the car industry today.

Don't have them program your remotes unless they will do it for free in light of all this other work, because they will charge some exhorbitant amount, and it will take you less than a minute to do it on your own.

I would recommend you spring for a third key, too, assuming your car is SecuriLock. I believe the key itself will cost about $25, but it's a relatively small percentage of the overall bill. Once you have two programmed keys, you can program all subsequent keys by yourself; again, if they charge you extra to program the third key, do it yourself. The reason I suggest the third key is that if you start with only two, and you lose one, not only do you need to buy another key for $25, but the dealer will charge you $50 to program a new second key because they have to hook it up to a machine that takes 15 minutes to do the programming.

Instructions for programming remotes and keys (you must have 2 working keys to program more by yourself) can be found in your owner's manual, or online if you don't have the manual.

Easiest thing to do is call a dealer and ask how much it's going to cost you.

Call around to different dealers. I bought a rebuilt 2004 that only had one key. I found a dealer that reprogrammed a new key for $25. When he hooked up the computer he said it had a Sabel door which I didnt know. He just had to use a different cable. It should cost more because you need the keypad code, but everything is available to them as soon as the hook up the computer. Some dealers I called wanted up to $100 to program just one key. After you have 2 you can do more your self.

Re: 1999 ford Taurus Keys and Keyless Entry

FYI,

I had only one key when I bought my 99 DOHC.
I bought a few blank / unprogrammed keys from EBAY. Then took them to a local lock smith that had a ford reprogramming computer and got a new key cut and programmed for ~ $35...

More work than the "Stealership", but is much cheaper..

The locksmith was able to program your keys even though you only had one key? Also, the cheap eBay keys work fine in your ignition?

Once you had the keys, how much did the locksmith charge for cutting each, and how much for programming?

Thanks!

Re: 1999 ford Taurus Keys and Keyless Entry

Yes, I only had one key.
It cost about ~$10 to cut ($5 per side), and ~$15 to program.

Be sure to call the locksmith and verify they have the ford hand held computer..a few that i talked to were not very knowlegable with programming the computer chip keys.

Once you have two working keys, you can easily program more keys ( I also bought EBAY remotes with no problems...
