Hitch/Bikerack Questions

I own a 2000 Honda Passport, rear mounted spare. Looking to get a trailer hitch and a hitch mounted bike rack. Looking for opinions of people that have this setup if anyone does. The rear door opens like a door, not down, does the swing away rack work to clear the door? Anyone have one? Does the one that just pivots downward clear the door enough for the door to open? Looking for any info out there. Bike season is upon us soon.
Thanks in advance for all the replies.
Jim

Re: Hitch/Bikerack Questions

how many bikes do you want to haul?

I have one that mounts to the rear door spare; it holds 2 bikes.

Re: Hitch/Bikerack Questions

i have the thule 4 bike carrier on my hicth
it's pretty nice .it can fold in 2 places. 1 where the bikes go on and then it also folds down near the hicth for that you can open the door.
the only thing i dont like about it is the way it's mounted it has a bolt that runs through the hole on your hicth.the guy at the bike shop said that you can drill the bolt out and use a pin but it will rattle..i keep the bolt but welded on a short chain and locked it to the hicth ..i didnt want to come back from a ride and see my rack missing

Mospeed1, do you know the model number of the hitch you have? Does it really swing enough out of the way to allow these rodeo/passport doors to open up all the way, or does it fold down enough to allow it to open? Even with bikes on the rack? I have seen the folding and the swinging away type. Thanks for the reply, hopefully I will hear back from you with these other answers.

Re: Hitch/Bikerack Questions

On my 98 Passport, I have a Hollywood Rack. It can angle downwards with the bikes on it but doesnt move enough for the door to completely clear it. There is access to open the door slightly though. With bikes on the rack, I doubt any brand will move sufficiently for the rear door to swing all the way open.
