Rb20det

Allright guys, normally i'd be posting this in the z section but i think you guys might have a little better knowledge on the engine than those guys, considering it's in some of your cars.

anyway, getting to the point, i'm looking at importing an 87 or 88 200ZR into canada and i was wondering if there might be any differences between the r32 gts-t/m/4 engine (gts4 is model has awd correct? engine might be slightly different i'm not sure) rb20det and the 200zr rb20det.... it seems like the motor was pretty popular for a lot of japanese model cars around that era, and they might have had differently tuned rb20's for the cars like they do the vq35 for the 350z/g35? i really have no idea, so that's why i'm asking you guys....

also, what's the stock hp for the rb20det... i've heard anywhere between 190 ps and 210 hp... so it's a pretty big gap for word of mouth. Now is it really worth modifying the rb20, or would it be more rewarding to swap to an rb25, or even try and make a 26 fit in there... (read somewhere that the gtr makes 380ish hp with just intake exhaust and boost controller ~DAMN~)

anyway, thanks for any help you guys can give me

Re: Rb20det

uh... thanks...

turns out it's approx 180ps and 23.0kgm... so approx 172 hp and 166 ft lbs? that's pretty weak compared to the skyline isn't it? skyline's... 212 and 195 of the skyline... think it's just bunk info or could there really be that much of a difference? probably just detuned... maybe cams and ecu are different? shouldn't be too hard to get up to at least skyline specs with a tiny bit of modification...

Re: Rb20det

Think the RB20DET in the 200ZR had a top mount IC and a different ECU (can't remember the name - NICS?) whereas the Skyline RB20DET had a bigger fender-mounted IC and the ECCS ECU. Not sure if the ECU's are swappable, but I doubt it.

Re: Rb20det

i see, thanks... i shouldn't see why the ecu's shouldn't be swappable... it's the same engine, same drivetrain (mostly) same transmission(i think) and approx. same year... i'm not worried about passing emissions.. and the tmic won't be there for long either
thanks for your help... know if the boost numbers are any different between the two?

Re: Rb20det

Try Skylinesdownunder.com or skylinesaustralia.com.

The engines may physically be the same, but the sensors may be quite different, e.g. the air flow meter, the throttle position sensor, then you have the coil packs and the igniter, injectors, etc. I'm not so sure about the 200ZR engine, but those are the things you'd have to check out.

Re: Rb20det

ah here we go...
RB20DET red top
1986-1987: 178bhp (NICS version)
1988-1989: 190bhp (ECCS version)
RB20DET silver top
1989 onwards: 214bhp

now just to figure out the exact differences... see how much of a pain it'd be to swap.. or just hope i can find an 88 200zr so i don't have to mess with any of it

i also read the turbo's are different, but i'd most likely be going to a t3/t4 combo once i do swap out the turbo so i'm not too worried about that... only pain will be finding intake/exhaust manifolds... but these can be fabricated... i'm thinking i'll be doing a lot of fabricating with this car... oh well, a professional welder for a friend is good thing to have when you're looking to fabricate
