Under-powered???

Greetings, new to this forum...

I have a '84 yota with a 22r (191,000 miles). 31.50x10.50 tires. 5spd manual. 4.88 limited slip rear end. I'm getting ready to do a 3" body lift and put 33x12.50 on it.

I have heard a lot of people state that these are under powered trucks but I'm not exactly sure what they mean. I only get about 17mpg but I attribute that to the gears and the fact that I'm pushing about 3000rpm at 65mph. This truck is bullet proof and will do anything I want.

I've hualed more then I care to state. I've climbed more hills then is recommended. I've even pulled out a dump truck that was buried to it's rear axle out of the mud.

Under powered. Other then 0-60 times, I think this truck is great. I'll never own another vehicle...Opinions?

Re: Under-powered???

I think when people say underpowered they mean that it's underpowered compared to a 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup.

It's because many car companies have adopted the philosophy 'bigger is better'. Now you have 300hp economy sport sedans, 500hp european luxury sedans, and huge trucks with loads of hp and torque. There are cars and trucks that I would call underpowered. But mostly, I just see many new cars as overpowered.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: Under-powered???

Anyone seen that video where the British do all types of stuff to a Toyota pick up and it won't die at all? They even set it on fire and it still runs.

The bar is constantly being raised, with buyers demanding -- and manufacturers building -- bigger, more powerful... and of course heavier and not as capable of the MPG possible with new technology if only the size and HP hadn't increased. True of trucks as well as cars.

My 'Yota was a 92, 2WD shortbed, and I got 25 around town and broke 30 on the highway, but my modifications were more "sports truck" than "off-road", so I presume our needs are/were different. Yes, I knew I couldn't out-accelerate school buses, much less performance cars, but I enjoyed buzzing around on the backroads. True, more HP was available, but I didn't want the cost, either initial $$ or loss of MPG. So, I installed a header, exhaust and that's it. Never had trouble pulling loads in our trailer with it, either.

Haha, yeah they let it sink into the ocean and hit it with a wrecking ball too.
