Question Programming Keyless Remote

Hi!

I've recently purchased a used 1998 Land Rover Discovery LSE and am VERY happy with it, especially given my half-mile, close-to-vertical private road!

I'm thinking of purchasing a keyless remote for the car (Lucas 3TXB Key; FCC: KHH 3TXB) and have been told by the closest dealer (90 minutes away) that I will have to bring the car and the remote in to them for programming and that, as an extra bonus -- ;-) -- they'll charge me $45 for the service. The guys at the online remote store say that I should be able to program the remote myself, through a mystical series of key turns, button pushes, and flipping of switches in the truck. They also say that the steps I need to take are "out there on the web."

Does anyone know these steps, or if it is even possible for me to do this myself?

Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Programming Keyless Remote

Susan,

This is a direct cut-and-paste from the LR Discovery Shop Manual that I purchased from Ebay. I hope this helps you...

HANDSET INITIALISATION
NOTE: New handsets are supplied in pairs.
If a new handset is required, it will require
initialisation to the ECU using the
following procedure:
1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.
3. Switch ignition ON.
4. Switch ignition OFF.
5. Lock doors.
6. Unlock doors.
7. Release bonnet switch.
8. Switch ignition ON.
9. Switch ignition OFF.
If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.
10. Press and hold down button on first handset until dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have
been initialised correctly.

Re: Programming Keyless Remote

Does your 96 model use the old 1 button, or the 2 button remote?

It is the switch underneath the hood on the drivers' side. Ours didn't work when we tried the same thing.. Bonnet is the British definition of "Hood"
