accord automatic transmission

I recently purchased a 1994 Accord (private purchase, not from a dealer) and I'm experiencing some transmission problems. When I accelerate after slowing down (usually to make a sharp turn), the car lurches before shifting into second. This doesn't happen when I accelerate from a complete stop. I called the Honda dealer and their response was that this is standard and that the car was "looking for the gear". Does anyone have any ideas about this? Should I take the car elsewhere? There are no idiot lights on and the transmission fluid is new (less than 300 miles).

Re: accord automatic transmission

Honda autos all seem very abrupt and lurchy to me.

Two of my friends have Accords around your year and I can also say the transmission is rough at times. The autos for those years werent the best. Ive driven two 96 accords with autos and the tranny can be rough and shifting abrupt sometimes. You might have a problem, but try driving other hondas to see if they act the same.

Gotta get a manual my friend.

I own a 94 Accord EX (F22B1) Automatic with 170,000 miles on it and lukcily my car runs great . I just recently found out that my transmission shifts nice and smooth once its warmed up. I use to think it was jerky but its not. Its only like that when its cold. drive your car around town for about 10 miles so the transmission can cycle through all the gears a few times and then see how it shifts. Also I heard sometims a rough shift can be because of an engine mount. I had to replace 3 of my engine mounts. Another factor is fluid. Always use genuine honda automatic transmission fluid. My transmission always has genuine honda automatic transmission fluid in it. That is recommended.

Re: accord automatic transmission

That lurch is also called rpm flair up. Its basically this. Your slowing down and the ECU starts to down shift the car, then suddinly you go to accellerate and sometimes if you get it when its just about to down shift the ECU gets confuse and thats what happens. Its pretty normal but some cars may do it more than others. Just due to drivers driving habits

Yeah that is true I have noticed that. That is just the transmission shifting to the right gear. It seems normal.

Re: accord automatic transmission

i rode my 95 accord ex yesterday - after playing around with an integra (was slow as heck, had a fart can eww, i killed it) when driving back to normal transmission and overall feel of the car was a little weird. But after letting it rest for a bit it drives pretty smooth.

Also, i left it in D3 by accident, wasn't watching speed on the highway and was waiting for it to shift i was like dang this gear is extra long! and it hit the rev limited and car started jumping that kinda scared me i was like :o never leaving it in d3 again lol my poor automatic tranny!

Years ago my friend and me were on a road trip late at night, going down the highway like a bat outta hell, stereo cranked, in his Dodge Daytona turbo.

I started hearing a high pitched whine over the music, and I shouted at him, "Hey! What the hell is that sound??!?"

He turns the stereo off, and we instantly realize it's the motor, turning 8500 RPM at full turbo boost, with the manual tranny in third instead of fifth gear

He forgot a couple of upshifts.

Another argument for not drinking and driving.

When we stopped on the shoulder to make sure everything was alright, the head was so hot, all the dirt and oil on it was smoking, and the exhaust manifold was glowing a dull red.
