Re: Failed
my accord did the same thing, it passed everything but HC idle. Your car is not burning enough fuel at idle. I replaced my air filter, plugs, cap, rotor and added RXP to my fuel. Drove it to work (50 miles) and it passed with eaze. The numbers were half.

Re: Failed
I agree, a tune up should solve your problems

Yup, like they said, HC's are unburnt fuel. either your not getting proper spark or your running rich.

Re: Failed
Go for a long high speed run (about 10 mins) then have the guy do the smog check while the engine is EXTREMELY hot. I failed my first smog check and doing that made me pass the second time. Since I knew the smog check guy he told me to park and rev the engine between 3-4000 rpm for about 5 minutes. That heats up everything and makes emissions a little cleaner. He said it's illegal for him to let me do that, and if a state inspector caught me doing that they wouldn't let me test...but it worked!

Someone once told me NOT to run premium fuel when doing emission tests. He never gave me the scientific explanation for why, but I do know that running higher octane in your HF is not helping. Octane ratings determine how much you can compress the fuel mixture before it combusts on its own. Higher performance engines need it since they run higher compression ratios.
