tracking down a misfire

A code scanner on loan from a local parts store identified my check engine light as a misfire in the fifth cylinder of my 2000 2.7 liter. Since then I have replaced the spark plugs and replaced the coil (as identified in an earlier thread, the fifth cylinder is the cylinder closest to the firewall on the passenger side). After replacing the coil, I disconnected the battery for 3 minutes to clear the error. No luck, I fired it up and still get the dreaded check engine light.
Anyone have a suggestion as to what to check next?

You have to get a quailty scanner like a snap on or a genisis scanner. Local parts stores are great for some stuff but as far as loaner toals, they are usually the cheapest thing out.
Try going to a trans shop like an aammco or a cottman. tell them you have a trans problem, yourcheck engine light is on , and ask them to clear it for you.

do you still have the misfire? Chances are, you have a really hard code, something other than the dead cylinder. If you still have that scanner, check for any other codes that may be in memory.
