92 Taurus Heating Problem

Hi,

My problem is a bit strange. I have scoured the internet and I am unable to find a similar case so I turn to you.

The problem is no matter what I do my blower speed switch and the selector switch keep melting. I have replaced the blower fan and all the switches cuz they were all melted again 3rd time... hoping it was a bad blower motor (drawing too much current) and BAM smoke pouring out of my dash again. Would the blower motor resistor have anything to do with this problem. It is the only thing I have not replaced. Its cold up here in canada and I need my heat. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the resistor definitely contributes the biggest part in determining how much current runs through the circuit. The thing is, I can't imagine how it would have failed. But, if it's an easy swap and a cheap part, I say try it. If the resistor isn't "resisting" well for some reason, then yes, too much current is going to go through the wiring. Another possibility is a short in your wiring whereby the current is bypassing the resistor.

i was told by the ford dealer that the resister would not cause the switches to melt but probably a short in the circuit somewhere... just great...

Re: 92 Taurus Heating Problem

If you are going to fix it yourself, I would reccommend making a couple of enlarged copies of the wiring diagram. This will help make the diagram easier to read and mark off as you check the wiring.
