Engine Belt Replacement

I have a 93 Labaron. I got a new serpentine belt to replace the old one. When I saw I have another belt that has to come off before this one can go on. The Hayes book shows both belts but only mentions how to take off the serpentine belt!

I unscrewed the bolt that is on top of what I think is the idler brackett thinking it would loosen the tension in the smaller belt. The people who wrote the manual must have some magic to take off this belt. I know this sounds stupid, but how do you take the smaller belt off? Does that whole brackett with the 3 bolts that holds the idler have to come off? What is that bolt for on idler?

I know it must be easy, but I couldn't see how to loosen it?

I have the exact same question for a 93 chevy lumina. The Haynes manual only shows one belt. Please post the solution if you figure it out.
Thanks!

Re: Engine Belt Replacement

What ever this smaller belt is attached to, whether air compressor or P.S. pump, what ever, it should have a pivot bolt and a adjustment bolt on that accesory. Sometimes there's a bracked bolt as well. Lossen all of these and slide the part foward. The belt should come off then.

The other possibility is that there is a tensioner holding the belt, in that case, you can generally put ratchet or pull bar over the pivot bolt for that and turn it in a direction that would release tension.

If someone else has some more specifics, please do share.

Re: Engine Belt Replacement

Assuming you have the 3.0, the exact procedure for removing the A/C compressor belt, locate the top pulley, there's a locknut on the front of the pulley. Get a 15mm wrench and LOOSEN (do not remove) the locknut. On the top of the pulley, there's an adjustment screw. Turn the the adjustment screw counterclockwise to loosen the pulley. Once you have loosened it enough to take the belt of by hand, you can now take off the alt./p.s. belt by getting a 15mm socket (preferably a breaker bar with a long handle for leverage and avoiding damaged knuckles) and move the tensioner towards the car to remove the belt.

Thank you---I did turn the bolt loose, however, could not see the screw. I tightened the bolt back up and sent the daughter on her way. I will change when I get the car back in a few weeks. Was the screw hole right by the bolt? I either missed when looking down or just spaced it. Thanks again.

Re: Engine Belt Replacement

If you look at the TOP pulley of the A/C belt, there will be a screw; before you can loosen that screw you must loosen the nut on the front of the pulley, once you have loosened that nut, you can now take the belt off.

Thank you. I loosened the bolt, then the top bolt. Took off the AC belt and then went to work on the Serp belt. Got that off and put the new one on. Not easy to wind it around, however, a few cuss words and knocking my knuckles got the job done.

Thanks again
